An aerial view of Blocks A to E. Today, only Block E remains.
Have you ever wondered where patients were housed before our wards were built?
In the early 1900s, Tan Tock Seng Hospital was located at Moulmein Road. In 1957, five 6-storey blocks were added to TTSH. The development, named "New Ward Blocks" was opened by the Honourable Mr A. J. Braga, the first Minister for Health of Singapore.
Today, only one out of the five blocks remains – Block E – and is home to Wards 81 to 86. |
Each of the ward blocks were also numbered in an anticlockwise fashion, starting from "1", with Block C as the anchor.
This simple layout coupled with the naming convention helped visitors and patients navigate Blocks A to E easily.
So how did Block E, which was previously home to Wards 51 to 56, become home to Wards 81 to 86? And where did Blocks A to D go?
Stay tuned as we share more about the developments of Blocks A to E in our sequel on March 2nd, 2015.
