Emeritus Consultant Prof Low Cheng Hock is a familiar face and a well-respected figure in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In his 38-year career at TTSH, Prof Low has served on various clinical and medical boards, actively volunteered with St. John Ambulance, and received countless accolades, including the Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Among the memorable experiences of his career, Prof Low recounted his trip to a rural hospital in Mount Kilimanjaro some years ago. There, he treated a Masai patient who had wrestled with a lion and required surgery. The patient recovered successfully and was able to return to his hometown in the mountains.
Prof Low’s passion for teaching and training, coupled with his humility, has also made him the go-to mentor for many medical students.
The best thing in life is to be able to lift somebody up. Both medicine and charity give you the opportunity. If each of us can do that, it will be good for the needy.
His motto has always been that “Knowledge makes one a doctor, but compassion makes one a healer.”
Prof Low’s compassion extends beyond medical practice. He is also a regular donor to TTSH Community Fund, the charity arm of Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Prof Low hopes that more doctors will follow in his footsteps and support TTSH Community Fund, which, in his words, “has been doing so much to help our needy patients”.
Prof Low explains, “I am not asking for everyone to donate a huge sum of money every month. But I would be very happy if more of our staff support TTSH Community Fund through sustained giving. TTSH has close to 9,000 staff. Imagine if every staff donates two dollars every month. It would have a great impact on the lives of needy patients!”
