The First Step is Important
Taking the first step in addiction recovery is crucial, as it signifies your commitment to change. It takes courage, but you are not alone.
We are here to support you.
Serenity Centre
At the Serenity Centre, we are dedicated to helping individuals by addressing their addictions in a supportive environment and equipping them with the necessary tools to manage their recovery.
Our inpatient ward provides a safe environment where individuals can heal, supported by professionals and recovering peers who understand the challenges of addiction. Our inpatient programme consists of two phases: Detoxification and Rehabilitation. These phases are specifically designed to address the needs of individuals seeking recovery, including those with comorbid mental health conditions.
Detoxification Programme
To recover from substance addiction, a formal detox period is the first stage of recovery. It prepares you physically and mentally before engaging in the rest of the rehabilitation process.
Generally, if you are substance dependent, you will experience very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when you discontinue your drug use. Our detoxification programme offers up to 7 days of support to help you relieve acute physical and emotional distress. Our clinicians will closely monitor withdrawal symptoms and offer care to ensure a safe detoxification process.
This programme aims to:
- Help you manage your withdrawal symptoms with the use of medications
- Support your recovery journey using motivational techniques
- Integrate treatment to address the needs of individuals with comorbid mental health conditions
Rehabilitation Programme
After you get through the withdrawal phase, you can choose to participate in the inpatient rehabilitation programme. Rehabilitation is the foundation for recovery.
Our rehabilitation programme combines evidence-based therapies, counselling, and holistic approaches to keep you on track. You may choose to undergo the modular programme for up to three weeks and benefit from our multidisciplinary team that will help you reach your goals.
The programme focuses on helping you to:
- Understand the addiction and recovery processes
- Manage your emotions including depression, anxiety, anger and stress
- Rebuild relationships and cultivate a healthy lifestyle
- Learn about relapse prevention
- Connect with recovery support services in the community
During your stay, we highly encourage you to take advantage of the various talks and sessions conducted by Occupational Therapist and community partners, such as WE CARE Community Services, Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Industrial & Services Co-Operative Society Ltd (ISCOS). These talks provide insights, support and guidance from experienced professionals and individuals who have walked a similar path.
In addition to attending these talks, we also emphasize the importance of collaboratively develop a discharge plan (which may include placement in halfway houses, and/or assistance from various government services) with your assigned counsellor. This will outline the steps and resources required to support your transition from the inpatient programme to the next phase of your recovery journey.

Family Matters
Family Matters has a team of dedicated specialists including psychiatrists and addiction counsellors who will support family members. The service is available to family members of existing NAMS clients as well as the general public.
Family Matters is a specialised individual counselling service for family members who experience tremendous stress and feelings of helplessness from living with someone with an addiction. Family members have their own unique recovery needs; just as the addict needs to recover from the addiction, family members need to get their own lives sorted out after years of neglecting their own needs. Studies have shown that there is a positive impact on the addicted person's recovery when his family members are in recovery too. The addicted person does not need to be a NAMS client for the family members to be seen by the Family Matters team.
Caring for someone with substance addiction can feel overwhelming and isolating. Our evening support group offers a safe, supportive space where you can connect with others, share experiences, and learn practical ways to cope.

Support Groups
At NAMS, we conduct individual, group and family therapy programmes for clients and their families to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to manage their addiction and work towards recovery. We also run separate groups for their families to come together to share their experiences and learn from each other in their journey towards recovery.
BRIDGE is an evening support group developed primarily for individuals suffering from drug and alcohol use problems.
What can I expect from BRIDGE?
BRIDGE members share their personal experiences and knowledge about recovery. Sessions also cover how to address drug and alcohol use problems (e.g., dealing with boredom, anger, stress, interpersonal conflicts, etc.). The sessions are facilitated by counsellors from NAMS and confidentiality is strictly maintained to provide a safe environment for everyone to share freely.
BRIDGE also encourages participants to share recovery resources and participate in recreational activities organized by senior members of the group. It strives to help clients connect with one another and develop positive relationships with each other and with the wider community.
What are the benefits of attending BRIDGE?
People with addiction often withdraw from family and friends. BRIDGE aims to:
To CONNECT with peers with similar problems who are seeking recovery; and
To LINK participants to recovery-centred resources and activities.
Recovering clients have found the sessions to be helpful. One patient described BRIDGE as a "safe and comfortable place where I can learn from fellow recovering addicts. And I learn how to share about my feelings." Another described BRIDGE as a "place to understand and be understood."

GAME is an eight-session psycho-educational skill-based group designed to help clients to stop gambling and better manage their lives through counselling and group therapy. The topics covered in the sessions include:
- Introduction to gambling addiction
- Financial management
- Crisis management
- Managing urges and cravings
- Managing gambling related cognition
- Repairing relationships
- Barriers to recovery
- Relapse prevention
Besides learning skills and strategies, members can also find support and help one another. Members benefit when they share honestly and openly about their struggles in recovery. While we encourage members to share, some members learn by just listening in the early phases, until they are ready to participate more actively. Our clients find GAME to be extremely helpful in connecting them with a recovering community that is both supportive and nurturing. They also find that the topics help them to stop gambling and reduce the likelihood of relapse.

At NAMS, we cater to adolescents from age 13. Youth tend to be impulsive and easily influenced by their peers. For these reasons, they are at risk of substance abuse, including binge drinking, inhalant addiction as well as addiction to gambling and excessive gaming or screen time problems.
We provide an integrated treatment service for adolescents struggling with substance and or behavioural addiction issues. The multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, counsellors and medical social workers will work with the young person and parents to address the concerns about their problem behaviour.
After an assessment by the psychiatrist for underlying psychiatric conditions, the adolescent client will receive counselling support to address the behaviour. The counsellor will also work closely with the school counsellor, probation officer (if any) and the family to consolidate the overall treatment.
For minors under 21 years of age, parental consent is needed for treatment at NAMS.
For children under the age of 13, please approach the Child Guidance Clinic.
