Empowering Communities Through Awareness and Education
The National Addictions Management Service delivers comprehensive education, continuous training, and public awareness initiatives. We believe that empowering our community and healthcare partners is vital to addressing addiction holistically, closing treatment gaps, and facilitating timely interventions.
- Building Community Resilience: Equipping the public, families, and partners with the knowledge to recognize early signs of addiction, reduce stigma, and encourage early help-seeking.
- Enhancing Professional Capabilities: Delivering specialized, evidence-based training tracks to upskill healthcare professionals and social service practitioners to elevate the standard of addiction care.
Empowering individuals, families, and organizations with the knowledge to recognize early signs of addiction, reduce stigma, and champion proactive help-seeking behaviours.
MAMS organizes a variety of public events and advocacy initiatives, including our annual flagship campaign, National Addictions Awareness Day (NAAD). Through public forums, interactive roadshows, community dialogues, and educational events, we drive meaningful conversations to reduce prejudice, raise awareness, and foster an inclusive, supportive society for individuals in recovery.
BICOMH 2024: ISAM Regional Conference on Behavioural Addictions
As part of the inaugural Biennial International Congress on Mental Health (BICOMH) 2024, IMH and NAMS partnered with the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) to host NAMS’ first-ever conference dedicated entirely to behavioural addictions. The global milestone event successfully bridged global clinical expertise with local community practice to improve recovery outcomes.
Key Highlights:
- Keynote Address: Global insights by Prof Marc N. Potenza (President-Elect of ISAM).
- Plenary & Breakout Sessions: Deep dives into the detection, early intervention, and socioeconomic impacts of behavioural addictions.
- Specialised Tracks: Legal perspectives on how behavioural addictions intersect with Singapore’s criminal law.
- Fireside Chats & Public Forum: Interactive Q&A sessions and public education tracks.
Special Highlight: Resource Book Launch
One of the standout moments of the BICOMH 2024 opening ceremony on 19 November was the official launch of Navigating Internet Gaming Disorder: A Manual for Helping Professionals.
Produced by NAMS’ clinical team, this guidebook supports frontline workers in addressing Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). It provides key insights into IGD, its associated psychiatric co-morbidities (overlapping mental health conditions), and step-by-step guidance for initial clinical assessments.
National Addictions Awareness Day
Launched in 2013, National Addictions Awareness Day (NAAD) is an annual initiative dedicated to raising public awareness about addiction, reducing social stigma, and encouraging early help-seeking behavior.
By collaborating with Community Development Councils (CDCs), schools, and community partners, NAAD bridges the treatment gap through a multipronged approach of public forums, workshops, and roadshows.
Objectives & Outreach Channels
- National Platform: Creating a unified national voice to eliminate prejudice and support individuals in recovery.
- Community & Capability Building: Conducting awareness talks, workshops, and roadshows for schools, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), community partners, and external agencies.
- Youth Engagement: Reaching out to tech-savvy youths through the official “More to Life SG” Facebook page (launched in September 2014) with engaging, educational content.
- Professional Training & Capability Building: Utilising our dedicated training arm to provide specialised clinical training and workshops on addiction prevention, treatment, and wellness, specifically designed to equip and build the capabilities of helping professionals.
- Collaborative Community Network: During our roadshows and events, NAMS partners with a wide network of community and government agencies to set up interactive, informative booths. These partnerships help connect residents with vital services and programs.
We believe the road to recovery begins with connection and communication. At NAMS, we are committed to building strong partnerships with our community stakeholders, recognising that collaboration is essential to ensuring continuity of care for clients transitioning back into the community. Through these collective efforts, we empower individuals with addictions and their caregivers with the skills and knowledge needed to manage recovery and maintain well-being.
Addressing addiction requires a shared responsibility. NAMS works closely with social service agencies, grassroots organisations, corporate workplaces, and educational institutions to build a resilient community support network. We provide public education talks, awareness workshops, and co-developed initiatives tailored to organisational needs, with a focus on prevention, mental wellness, and early intervention.
