Why is a Sexual Health Check Up important?
Sexual health is important to everyone. Some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may have no symptoms; therefore regular sexual health screens are useful to prevent any long-term complications. Practising safer sex, i.e. using condoms correctly and consistently, can help prevent the spread of STIs. You will have a consultation to establish which STIs to test for and which tests to be taken.
Female Sexual Health Examination
Women’s sexual health screening may include:
| Types of Tests | Types of STIs screened |
|---|---|
| Blood Tests |
|
| Swab/Smear Tests (from the vagina and cervix, rectum if anal sex) |
|
Swab/smear test involves an examination of the vagina using a speculum. A urine sample for chlamydia and gonorrhoea may be taken instead if a speculum examination cannot be performed. A throat swab may be taken if you have been exposed to gonorrhoea.
Male Sexual Health Examination
Men’s sexual gealth screening may include:
| Types of Tests | Types of STIs screened |
|---|---|
| Urine Tests |
|
| Blood Tests |
|
| Swab/Smear Tests* (from the urethra – tip of penis, throat if oral sex with men, rectum if anal sex) |
|
Swab/smear test involves the collection of cells from the test site with a cotton tip or similar.
If you have symptoms (eg. pain when passing urine or discharge from penis) you will need to hold your urine for 4 hours before visiting the clinic for the smear tests.
