Research Facilities
The Infectious Disease Research Laboratory (IDRL) provides intellectual and infrastructural support with state of the art facilities for clinician researchers and scientists to conduct their infectious disease laboratory-based research.

Research and Activities
IDRL integrates research activities in the area of infectious diseases with interactions and collaborations and provides avenues for multi-disciplinary activities.
Studies initiated in this laboratory include research on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Human Immunodefienciency Virus (HIV), Dengue Viruses, Influenza Viruses and various bacterial pathogens.
This facility will encourage the translation and application of research findings, as well as raise public awareness of infectious disease research.
Major equipment in the lab includes the following:
- Applied Biosystems 3100-Avant Genetic Analyser: performs DNA sequencing, genescaning, and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis
- Roche LightCycler Real-Time PCR Instrument: provides real-time PCR analysis in pathogen detection, gene expression analysis, etc
- MagNA Pure Compact: automated benchtop system for nucleic acid purification with low to medium sample throughout.
- Imaging Systems & Software
- Cell culture incubators
- Freezers and deep freezer
About the National Centre for Infectious Diseases Research Clinic.

The National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) Research Clinic houses a comprehensive suite of facilities for conducting research: from consultation and study procedures to drug-storage/preparation and sample processing. The clinic supports investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies from NCID, other institutions within the National Healthcare Group, and the wider infectious disease community in Singapore.
NCID Research Clinic Facilities
The NCID Research Clinic features the following facilities and equipment:
Consultation and Procedure Rooms
There are 4 consultation and 3 procedure rooms within the clinic. The consultation room is designed for participant screening, recruitment, physical examination, short procedures and follow up visits, while the procedure room is intended for specimen
collection (e.g. blood, saliva, and urine), intravenous infusions and other procedures. The functions of these private rooms are interchangeable should there be a need for more consultation rooms or vice versa.
Satellite Laboratory

The satellite laboratory allows for immediate processing and storage of clinical specimens after collection. The laboratory is fully-equipped, with laboratory benches, centrifuges and Biosafety Cabinets, for a variety of needs. There are 4⁰C fridges, -20⁰C / -30⁰C freezers and -80⁰C freezers to cater to the storage requirements for different specimens and studies. For more comprehensive laboratory testing, the specimens can be sent to the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory (IDRL) which is located within NCID at Level 2.
Drug Storage and Preparation Room

The research clinic is also equipped with an on-site drug-storage and preparation room to aid research work that involves the usage of investigational products. It is a secured room which houses storage cabinets and 4⁰C fridges for proper storage of
drugs. The temperature of the room and storage area is monitored.
Contact Us
Investigators of ongoing and new studies – whether at grant application or implementation stage – who are interested in using the NCID Research Clinic can contact the team at researchoffice@ncid.sg for more information and a feasibility review.
The Clinical Research & Innovation Office (CRIO) promotes and coordinates research activities in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and is equipped with skills and capabilities to support its research enterprise.
One example is the P.H Feng Research Centre (PHFRC), named in memory of the late Professor Feng Pao Hsii (1936–2015), a visionary medical leader who established the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Clinical Research Unit in 1997. The Research Centre is intended to support researchers with clinical trials of new medications where study participants may need to stay after office hours or overnights for trial procedures. The mission of PHFRC is to provide facility and trial management support to researchers within NCID and the National Health Group.

Located at level 2 of NCID within the integrated HealthCity Novena community, the Research Centre offers the following facilities:
- Examination and consultation rooms
- Properly equipped inpatient ward for drug studies
- Drug storage and preparation
- Laboratory specimen processing
- Records storage
- Volunteer entertainment room
