SCORE OF 0: Non-problem Gambling
This score means that the individual is identifying no negative consequences of gambling. They may gamble at low levels or not at all, or they may gamble at social levels that are not problematic.
SCORE OF 1 OR 2: Low Risk Gambling
This score means that the individual is probably gambling at levels that are not leading to negative consequences. If the person gambles frequently are/or had at least two of the vulnerability factors listed below, this score may indicate enough rish to be explored.
SCORE BETWEEN 3 & 7: MODERATE Risk Gambling
This score means that the individual is gambling at levels that may or may not be leading to negative consequences. This score indicates a level of rish that should be explored, particulary if the person gambles frequently and/or has three or four of the vulnerability factoes listed below.
SCORE BETWEEN 8 & 27: Problem Gambling
This score means that the individual is gambling at levels that are leading to negative consequences. They may have lost control of their gamnbling behaviour. The higher their score, the heavier their gambling, and the more vulnerability factors they have (see list below), the more severe their problem is likely to be. These individuals should definitely be encouraged to examine their gambling behaviour and its consequences.
List of Vulnerability factors
- Mistaken beliefs about the odds of winning at gambling
- A big win early in the person's gambling history
- A history of drug, alcohol, gambling or overspending problems
- A family history of drug, alcohol, gambling or overspending problems
- A history of mental health problems, particularly depression, stress or trauma
- Loneliness, chronic boredom or lack of leisure activities
- A habit of using gambling or substances to cope with negative feelings or events
- A tendency toward impulsive behaviour
- Financial problems
