
Sports Medicine (Integrated Programme)

Our Programme
The Sports Medicine Integrated Programme is a 3-year programme offered across the National Healthcare Group (NHG), National University Health System (NUHS) and Singapore Health Services (Singhealth). This programme aims to prepare residents to manage a broad range of conditions pertinent to sports and exercise.
The programme aims to equip residents with the skills and knowledge required to manage conditions as part of a care team with an evidence and sports science-based approach. During the training, residents will be exposed to clinical medicine as well as sports science postings. There will be opportunities to participate in medical education and research projects. There will also be exposure to on-field work in the areas of sports events and pitch-side cover, as well as sports science.

Training Objectives

The end goal in mind is to develop sports medicine specialists who are:
- Competent in the diagnosis and management of sports injuries.
- Competent in fulfilling the duties of a Team Physician, including – Pre-participation screening, event medical coverage, doping control & counselling, early management of sports injuries and sports related medical conditions in primary care.
- Competent in managing patients in disability sports.
- Proficient in exercise testing and prescription in both diseased and disease-free populations.
- Habitual life-long learners.
- Proficient in applying principles of Sports Science in the management of athletes.
- Familiar with a wide variety of sports
- Professional in their interactions within the multidisciplinary team supporting the athlete.
- Proficient in conducting applied research in the fields of Sports and Exercise Science and Medicine.
- Proficient in conducting common investigations and procedures in Sports and Exercise Medicine

- 30 months in Sport Medicine, at accredited Acute Care Hospitals
- 6 months in Sport Science, at High Performance Institute

Selection Criteria
What are the programme's selection criteria?
Sports Medicine residents will be selected through an interview process. We are looking for the following qualities in our potential applicants:
The Sports Medicine Integrated Programme seeks applicants who demonstrate the following essential qualities:
Base Criteria
- Clinical Competence
- a) Medical Knowledge: Demonstrate a strong understanding of basic and clinical sciences.
- b) Performance: Exhibit good work performance and receive positive feedback in prior postings, whether as a medical student, house officer or medical officer.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- a) Communication: Exhibit effective and clear communication with patients, their family members as well as other healthcare professionals.
- b) Teamwork and Collegiality: Demonstrate the ability to work well and collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including nursing, allied health, and administrative teams.
- Professionalism
- a) Integrity and Accountability: Maintain high standards of integrity and accountability at work.
- b) Conscientiousness: Show diligence in completing tasks, such as administrative and clinical work, in a timely manner.

- c) Commitment: Show dedication to completing the 3 - year Sports Medicine Integrated Programme.
Pre-requisite
To be eligible for Sports Medicine residency training, candidates would have to fulfil either of the 2 pre-requisites below by the commencement date of the residency traineeship:
a) Acquired the Master of Medicine (MMed) in Family Medicine1 or
b) Be fully exited from one of the following base specialties:
- Advanced Internal Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Orthopaedic Surgery
1 Applicants will need to be registered with the Family Physicians Accreditation Board (FPAB).
Applicants must also fulfil the following criteria:
- Be employed by a Singapore Public Healthcare Institute, latest by the start date of the Sports Medicine Integrated Programme residency training, in the specified year applied.
Optional Criteria
- Clinical Experience in Relevant Postings
- a) Experience as a medical officer in Orthopaedic Surgery / Rehabilitation Medicine / Other musculoskeletal – focused specialities.
- b) Expected Competencies: Familiarity with basic musculoskeletal examination techniques, some knowledge of management of common musculoskeletal conditions.
- Research Experience:
- a) Research Participation: Involvement in research and/or quality improvement projects.
- Current or prior sports participation
- a) Non-essential but helpful to understand competitive and performance-oriented mind-set of sporting patients.
- a) Experience as a medical officer in Orthopaedic Surgery / Rehabilitation Medicine / Other musculoskeletal – focused specialities.
- b) Expected Competencies: Familiarity with basic musculoskeletal examination techniques, some knowledge of management of common musculoskeletal conditions.
- a) Research Participation: Involvement in research and/or quality improvement projects.
