It has been said that there is “no health without mental health". Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected communities worldwide including Singapore, brought to the fore the human face of any medical condition. It highlighted the psychological sequelae experienced by many individuals, such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related stress symptoms, and feelings of loss and grief. The process of healing and recovery must therefore address both physical and psychosocial issues faced by affected individuals. As Singapore advances into the HealthierSG era, we need to continue to attend to the comprehensive needs of individuals and the population at large, including their mental health.
Psychiatry is a complex discipline requiring the accumulation and distillation of understanding from diverse fields such as biological sciences, clinical medicine, social sciences like psychology, and the humanities. The practice of psychiatry calls for a holistic approach that integrates the art and science of medicine in the evaluation and management of each patient under our care. The field is also rapidly evolving, having undergone significant transformation over recent years, with advances in neuroscience and biological disciplines illuminating the possible aetiological basis of psychiatric disorders and guiding breakthroughs in management. There is now an added impetus for digitalisation, personalised, and precision medicine in psychiatry practice.
The NHG Health National Psychiatry Residency Programme is a 5-year structured training programme designed to support residents from early postgraduates training through to independent practice. Through a combination of core and elective clinical postings across various clinical settings, the programme equips residents with a strong foundation in general psychiatry and the management of a wide range of psychiatric conditions. This prepares graduates to meet Singapore’s present and future mental health needs while promoting psychological well‑being. We aspire to inspire our graduates to continually pursue clinical and academic excellence, shaping the future of psychiatry with compassion, innovation, and a deep commitment to improving mental health care for all.
Our compact yet broad-based training curriculum provides residents with a firm foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of psychiatric disorders, complemented by clinical experience and close supervision in diverse local treatment settings. With a strong focus on longitudinal development, we prioritise close supervision, formative feedback, and collaborative learning across diverse landscapes of practice in mental health. Our dedicated and committed faculty nurture passionate residents in their professional growth, equipping them to become competent psychiatrists who can deliver optimal care for patients amidst evolving mental health needs.
Join us in shaping the future of mental health care and making a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and the community!
