Our Mission
The NHG Family Medicine Residency Programme aims to deliver high-quality, evidence-based training to develop competent Family Physicians, equipped to provide excellent primary care and lead healthcare transformation in Singapore.
Programme Goals
We are committed to developing Family Physicians who:
Deliver personal, primary, preventive, comprehensive, continuing, and compassionate care to all patients
Contribute to the advancement of Family Medicine through practical and scientific knowledge
Maintain medical excellence in academic pursuits and professional conduct
Engage in lifelong learning through an adaptive, learner-centred curriculum
Provide coordinated healthcare within the community-based healthcare system
About The Programme
Family Physicians play a central role in delivering holistic, person-centred care across the lifespan. Our three-year residency programme equips doctors with the clinical skills, professional values, and systems understanding required to practise confidently in Singapore’s evolving primary care landscape.
Comprehensive Clinical Training
Our residents gain broad clinical exposure through rotations across multiple specialties, complemented by elective postings that allow personalisation based on interests. This ensures a strong foundation for managing the wide range of conditions encountered in primary care, with an emphasis on hands-on clinical skills and supervised learning in real-world settings.

Skills for Lifelong Practice
Beyond clinical knowledge, our programme emphasises systems-based practice and practice-based learning. Residents develop the ability to adapt, reflect, and continuously improve, which are essential skills for long-term effectiveness in practice.
Mentorship and Supervision
From the first year, residents receive mentorship from experienced Family Physician supervisors during weekly half-day supervised primary care clinic sessions. In subsequent years, residents transition to continuity clinics within NHG Polyclinics, managing their own panel of patients with faculty support.
Training Environment and Team-Based Care
NHG Polyclinics provides a rich learning environment grounded in strong Family Medicine principles, with an emphasis on team-based, patient-centred care.
Residents learn through supervised consultations and hands-on teaching that is embedded within daily clinical work, while working within a teamlet model comprising a doctor, nurse care manager, and care coordinator. This enables coordinated, longitudinal care across settings, including chronic disease management and preventive care.
Through this environment, residents develop practical skills in collaboration, care coordination, and systems-based practice, which are essential for effective primary care.

Faculty
Residents are guided by experienced clinicians and educators across NHG institutions, including Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, National University Hospital, and community hospitals.
Our core faculty are committed to teaching and mentorship, providing consistent supervision, feedback, and support throughout residency.
