Adj A/Prof James Kwan is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. He graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals, University of London, in 1996 and obtained the MRCSEd (Surgery-in-General) in 1999, before moving to Sydney, Australia, to complete his specialist training in Emergency Medicine. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine in 2006, followed by Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine in 2008. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore, College of Emergency Physicians, in 2018.
Adj A/Prof Kwan holds a Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology (with Merit) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Health Professions Education (cum laude) from Maastricht University, the Netherlands. His academic training underpins his longstanding commitment to excellence in medical education and assessment.
He is a Council Member of the College of Clinician Educators and previously served on the Council of the College of Emergency Physicians from 2020 to 2024. Internationally, Adj A/Prof Kwan is the Chair of the Academic Committee of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM), a member of its Finance, Risk and Governance Committee, and a Past Chair of the IFEM Core Curriculum and Education Committee.
He is an Adjunct Associate Professor (Adj A/Prof) at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University. Adj A/Prof Kwan is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He is a core clinical faculty member in the NHG Emergency Medicine Residency Programme and a past undergraduate emergency medicine posting Director for NUS at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In recognition of his contributions to teaching, he received the NHG Teaching Award for Senior Clinicians in 2018.
Prior to relocating to Singapore in 2016, Adj A/Prof Kwan served as Academic Head of Emergency Medicine and Head of Assessment at the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University, Australia. He has led curriculum development and assessment initiatives at both national and international levels and is a frequent invited speaker at regional and global conferences. His academic interests include curriculum design, assessment, and faculty development, along with clinical interests in disaster medicine and trauma management.
