Pharmacists who are interested to advance their practice can now pursue the specialities of their choice through the National Pharmacy Residency Programmes.
The National Pharmacy Residency Programmes, implemented by the Ministry of Health in January 2016, aims to equip accredited specialist pharmacists with the skills to provide specialised pharmaceutical care services in the public healthcare institutions of Singapore, through various Pharmacy Residency programmes accredited by Pharmacy Specialists Accreditation Board (PSAB).
As a requirement, they will be trained under the National Pharmacy Residency Year 1 Programme (R1) to gain professional and clinical competence in the delivery of patient-centred care services and be prepared to provide advanced pharmaceutical care as clinical pharmacists, before joining the National Pharmacy Residency Year 2 Programmes (R2).
Building on the broad-based skills gained in R1 residency programmes, residents will be trained to specialise their pharmacy practice and provide care in the most challenges cases through a structured training curriculum in R2, involving learning activities like discussions, oral presentation, research, working with a targeted group of patients, as well as practice of personal development such as leadership, management skills and teamwork. They will become independent specialist practitioners in the respective advanced areas of pharmacy, while taking part in educating other health care professionals, trainees, and the public.
NHG institutions serve as the main training sites for these pharmacy residency specialities: Cardiology, Geriatrics, and Psychiatry.
