Curriculum

The first year of residency includes various preparatory courses such as patient communication and microsurgical courses. There is also protected time for training and education, which will take the form of didactic lectures, wet laboratory sessions, and patient encounters. Emphasis during the first year of training is placed on emergent eye conditions.

During the second to fourth years of residency, residents rotate among different subspecialties to increase their exposure to a wide variety of ophthalmic diseases. These rotations take on a step-wise approach, such that the resident progressively spends more time in subspecialty clinics and operating theatres in accordance with experience and seniority. In the final year of training, the resident will be able to perform most routine procedures and surgeries independently. At this stage of training, the senior resident will also be equipped to supervise junior residents in selected cases and simple procedures.

Teaching Activities

We have teaching activities scheduled almost daily. These take the form of grand ward rounds, journal clubs, subspecialty rounds, histopathology rounds, radiology rounds and surgical video rounds. These activities are conducted by both intra- and inter-departmental faculty members, allowing a wealth of experience and knowledge to be shared with those seeking to learn.

Research Opportunities:

With an ever-growing research culture here at NHG Ophthalmology, the resident will be given ample opportunities to perform clinically significant research. Such research activities have allowed our alumni and current residents to present at reputable conferences, both local and overseas. Senior staff, well versed in clinical and scientific research, will mentor and guide each resident through this process.

Professional Development

There is a need for more consultant ophthalmologists in Singapore. The cluster may offer an associate consultant position to a resident upon his/her successful completion of the residency programme. The resident may choose to do a fellowship in one of these subspecialties under the umbrella of Ophthalmology:
