Prof Chua Hong Choon is a distinguished psychiatrist and prominent healthcare leader who helmed the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) as Chief Executive Officer for a decade from 2011 to 2021. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry within IMH’s East Region, with a focus on patients with Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Throughout his career, Prof Chua has championed clinical quality, epidemiological research, and systemic reform. Notably, he served as IMH's very first Patient Safety Officer, developing foundational initiatives to safeguard patient wellbeing. 

A pioneer in public health research, he led Singapore’s inaugural nationwide epidemiological survey on depressive and anxiety disorders in 2004. Furthermore, as Senior Consultant to the Ministry of Health from 2007 to 2010, he oversaw critical national projects to promote community mental health and scale medical services. A dedicated educator, Prof Chua chaired the national Residency Advisory Committee for Psychiatry for ten years and continues his passion in knowledge and growth as an Adjunct Professor and Associate Professor across Duke-NUS, NUS, and NTU medical schools.

His enduring focus on population health, psychological safety, and compassionate, person-cantered care continues to advance psychiatric medicine and clinical excellence across the region.
