KTPH: Acupuncture
Overview

中文 | Bahasa Melayu | தமிழ்

Acupuncture is a key therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), used for health maintenance and managing various conditions. It works by restoring the body's natural balance and supporting its ability to heal and regulate itself.

Modern research suggests acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and releases natural chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin to reduce pain and support well‑being. It may also improve blood flow, regulate inflammation, and support the body's stress response.

Your Acupuncture Visit: What to Expect

Acupuncture uses very fine, single‑use sterile needles and is generally well tolerated, with little to no discomfort. Patients are advised to come well‑rested and avoid very full or empty stomachs. Treatments typically last about 20 minutes and may include gentle stimulation to enhance effects.

We accept referrals from any doctor or dentist, including family physicians and specialists from hospitals. Sessions are by appointment and treatment plans vary by individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does treatment hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine. Most people feel no or very little pain when they are inserted. They often say they feel energised or relaxed after the treatment. There may be temporary soreness.

2. Are the needles sterilised?

We use pre–sterilised, individually packed disposable needles which minimize the chances of infection.

3. What can I expect during treatment?

Fine stainless-steel needles will be inserted at specific acupoints of the body. Heat or electrical stimulation might be used simultaneously to boost the therapeutic effect. Acupuncture lasts for about 20 minutes.

4. How do I prepare for acupuncture?

To minimise the risk of dizziness or fainting, it is advisable to avoid coming for treatment on an empty stomach or right after a heavy meal and to be well-rested before your session. Wear loose and comfortable clothes for ease of treatment.

5. How many sessions will I need?

This varies with every individual. The acupuncturist will discuss with you the treatment plan on your first visit. In general, chronic conditions will require more sessions.

6. Can I walk in for an acupuncture session?

A referral is required. We accept referrals from any doctor or dentist, including family physicians, specialists from private or restructured hospitals indicating the referred condition. Patients are seen on an appointment basis.
