Impact of drug use disorders (DUDs)
20 May 2025

Addressing drug use disorders (DUDs) requires a holistic approach encompassing prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and strong community support to mitigate long-term harm. Adj A/Prof Lee Cheng, Clinical Director of IMH’s Office of Population Health, highlighted the wide-ranging impact of DUDs on individuals, families, and society.

Prolonged drug use can lead to severe cardiovascular, respiratory, liver, kidney, and neurological damage, as well as increase the risk of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis. Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, and suicidal tendencies are also common.

Families often face financial strain, domestic conflict, and emotional distress, while communities face the burden of rising healthcare costs, reduced workplace productivity, and greater social welfare demands. Drug-related crimes further strain the legal system, increasing law enforcement and incarceration costs.
