The article referenced the stigmatising portrayal of schizophrenia in the TV series ‘Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story’. When Dr Charmaine Tang, Senior Consultant and Chief, Department of Psychosis & Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) at IMH, wrote a forum letter to highlight her concerns, Mediacorp acknowledged the issue and apologised. Dr Tang found both Mediacorp’s response, and the resulting public response to her forum letter encouraging and heartening.

Dr Tang emphasised that schizophrenia is a serious mental illness, not a character flaw. Two individuals with lived experience, Aiwen and Enxin (pseudonyms), also shared their personal experiences and perspectives on media representation. They advocated for balanced media portrayals that neither stereotype patients as dangerous nor idealise them as extraordinary.

Enxin specifically cited the Korean drama "Daily Dose of Sunshine" for its portrayal of a character living with schizophrenia, which showcased his everyday struggles and both his well and unwell states without stereotyping him as dangerous or unpredictable.
