Dr Shum Cheuk Fan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2003. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (MRCSEd) in 2007, and was conferred Master of Medicine (MMed Surgery) in 2008. He was the inaugural Advanced Specialist Trainee in Urology when Khoo Teck Puat Hospital was accredited as a JCST Urology Training Center in 2011. He was a pioneer staff member involved in the migration from Alexandra Hospital to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and coordinated the setting up of key urology services such as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy and transrectal ultrasound guided prostatic biopsy. He attained his Fellowship of Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS Urology) in 2016.
Dr Shum completed a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Urology in Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana, United States in 2017, which empowered him to perform urologic operations with least post-operative morbidities to his patients. His Fellowship status was recognized by the prestigious Endourological Society, which awarded him with the Advanced Clinical Training Certificate in Laparoscopic / Robotic Surgery. Upon his return to Singapore, he became a strong advocate for the use of laparoscopic surgery for many urologic conditions in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and streamlined this service to meet international standards of care. The trifecta rate for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy soared to above 90%, and many new and complex laparoscopic operations became available. In Aug 2019, he was awarded the Youth Section Fellowship, jointly by the Urological Association of Asia and the European Association of Urology, for his efforts in transforming minimally invasive urology for patients without access to the surgical robot.
With subspecialty interest in kidney cancers, Dr Shum published multiple scientific papers on the treatment and outcomes of renal masses. His publications can be found in top-tiered medical journals, such as the Journal of Endourology, and featured in online resource platforms for healthcare professionals and patients, such as UroToday®. Some of his clinical research areas include intra-operative fluorescence for accurate tumor identification during partial nephrectomy, prediction of renal function, impact of tumor margin status, and survival after partial nephrectomy. Dr Shum is also an enthusiastic teacher. He has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Adjunct Lecturer by the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technologial University, since 2020. He served as examinars in various medical undergraduate and post-graduate examinations.
Dr Shum remained focused in his role as a clinician to deliver quality care. Since Khoo Teck Puat Hospital days, he was a Service Champion on multiple occasions including a consecutive 3-year period, and was nominated into the Medical Care Quality Improvement Committee. In Nov 2020, Dr Shum joined Woodlands Health and, together with new friends and colleagues, strived to overcome the challenges in setting up the newest restructured hospital in Singapore. He has led various teams in planning urology services and workflows, equipment procurement and manpower recruitment. As of today, he is the most senior urologist in WH and has served as chairperson and member in more than 10 evaluation committees, the Endoscopy Committee, the Hospital Clinician - Department Assessment & Standards Committee and the Specialist Outpatient Clinic Ambulatory Procedure Taskforce. His vision for WH urology to become a preferred service among the general public inspired many fellow colleagues, and WH urology has grown from a 3-man team in 2020 to a 7-man strong team today.
In addition to developing the clinical front for WH urology, Dr Shum has also worked towards making WH urology the preferred center for training among students and for collaboration among industrial partners. For his efforts, he was awarded the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence (NUS) in 2020 and 2023, the NHG Teaching Award for Senior Doctors in 2021, and the MOH NMRC Clinician Innovator Award, NMRC in Mar 2022.
