Dr Derrick Guo is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic sports surgeon who subspecialises in shoulder & elbow, hip & knee surgeries, and sports injuries.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) and was awarded a scholarship whilst at NUS to study at Harvard Medical School as part of a collaboration between the 2 schools. He obtained his Masters of Medicine (Orthopaedic Surgery) from NUS and is an accredited specialist and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Academy of Medicine Singapore. He is also certified by Exercise is Medicine Singapore (EIMS).
His practice includes minimally invasive (keyhole), arthroscopic shoulder & elbow, hip & knee surgeries, and sports injuries. He also performs joint preserving surgeries such as cartilage and joint realignment surgeries such as osteotomies and is committed to keeping his patients active for as long as possible.
Dedicated to refining his surgical skills, Dr Guo was awarded a scholarship and successfully completed a prestigious year-long fellowship in sub-specialty training in Sports Surgery at the Santy Orthopedique Centre in Lyon, France. Under the mentorship of esteemed and world-renowned surgeons Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, Dr. Mathieu Thaunat, Dr. Arnaud Godeneche, and Dr. Lionel Neyton where he learned advanced complex surgeries of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee such as computer/robot-assisted navigated shoulder replacement surgery, massive rotator cuff (RC) tendon tears, soft tissue and bone block procedures for shoulder instability (Latarjet and Eden-Hybinette procedure), revision shoulder arthroplasty, elbow arthroscopy and arthroplasty surgery, arthroscopic hip surgery (FAI/impingement and labral tears), multi-ligamentous (ACL/PCL/MCL/LCL/MPFL), meniscal, cartilage and realignment surgeries(osteotomies/DFO/HTO) of the knee. With Santy Orthopedique Centre being a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, Dr Guo had the privilege to work with top athletes from the various professional leagues in the region such as the English Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga, Euroleague Basketball, Top 14 and Super XIII Rugby.
During this period of training, he also had the opportunity to operate, learn and work with an extensive network of expert shoulder & elbow, hip & knee surgeons in Annecy, Paris, Toulouse, Nice, Marseille in France, Geneva in Switzerland, and Antwerp in Belgium.
He is also an educator and innovator and dedicates time to teaching medical students & surgical residents. He enjoys research and working with medical startups to develop new and innovative ways to change and improve the practice and outcomes of medicine and orthopaedic surgery.
He is a currently Adjunct Lecturer and Clinical Faculty to the NHG Orthopaedic Surgery Program, Duke-NUS School of Medicine, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (NTU) as well as Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS). He is also a Clinical Instructor of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Course.
Dr Guo is an active member of the AO Foundation, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA), European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow (SECEC), Asia-Pacific Knee, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Society (APKASS), Academy of Medicine Singapore (AMS) and Singapore Orthopaedic Association (SOA).
