Biodata
Dr Ishara is a consultant within the Department of Surgery at Woodlands Health, specializing in general surgery and colorectal surgery. Since joining Woodlands Health in 2021, he has played a pivotal role as a member of the pioneering surgical team responsible for establishing the department of surgery.
His academic journey began at the University of Colombo, where he completed his undergraduate education in 2012. He then pursued postgraduate surgical training in Singapore, earning his membership at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015 and his Master of Medicine (Surgery) at the National University of Singapore in 2018.
In 2020, he successfully completed his residency in general surgery and obtained his Fellowship of General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Ishara achieved specialist accreditation in General Surgery from the Specialist Accreditation Board, Singapore, in 2021.
Recognized for his commitment to excellence, Dr Ishara was honoured with the Ministry of Health Healthcare Manpower Development Plan grant in 2023. Subsequently, he completed an advanced clinical fellowship at the prestigious John Golliger Colorectal Centre at the St. James University Hospital in Leeds, United Kingdom, from 2023 to 2024. During this period, he gained extensive experience in managing advanced colorectal cancer, performing pelvic exenterative surgeries, and conducting laparoscopic and robotic colorectal cancer resections.
Dr Ishara actively contributes to the realms of research and education. His scholarly work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his scientific findings at surgical conferences both locally and internationally. Noteworthy achievements include winning the Best Free Paper Award at the Singapore Trauma Conference in 2011 and being a finalist for the Singapore Investigator of the Year Award in 2014. Additionally, he serves as a clinical lecturer in General Surgery at the National University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, actively engaging in undergraduate education.
Fluent in both English and Sinhalese, Dr Ishara places a strong emphasis on a holistic approach to patient care. His philosophy encompasses not only addressing the disease but also considering patients' expectations, cultural backgrounds, and social needs.
