Adj Asst Prof Thng Zheng Xian is a Consultant with the NHG Eye Institute at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Dr Thng completed his undergraduate medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (YLLSOM, NUS) in 2012 where he graduated with honours and as class valedictorian, garnering 14 medals and awards, and 5 distinctions in the fields of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology and surgery.
He subsequently obtained his Masters of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from NUS in 2016 and successfully completed his Ophthalmology specialist exit exam in 2018 and was awarded 3 of 8 Gold Medals for being the Best Candidate in Neuro-ophthalmology, Oculo-plastic and Adnexal Disease and Paediatric Ophthalmology. From 2018 to 2020, Dr Thng completed a Uveitis and Medical Retina fellowship with TTSH Ophthalmology Department and in 2023, he furthered his subspecialty training with the world renowned Prof Quan Dong Nguyen (Byers Eye Institute, Stanford University School of Medicine) in the United States under the Singapore Ministry of Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) scholarship, focusing on early phase clinical trials of novel pharmacotherapeutics and advanced immunomodulatory therapies.
Dr Thng is passionate about training and education and believes in advocating for medical students and residents alike. He has served as both chief resident and chief senior resident during his training days and has been a member of the National Healthgroup Residents' Council, Residency Program Review Committees and the Singapore Chief Residency Program amongst others.
Dr Thng's contributions towards Ophthalmology education have been recognized with several individual and departmental teaching accolades awarded by TTSH and NUS. Currently, he serves as Adj Asst Prof and Posting Coordinator with YLLSOM, NUS and Clinical Lecturer with Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Dr Thng's areas of clinical interest include medical retina, uveitis, ocular immunology and inflammation, cataracts and general ophthalmology. He is especially interested in complex medical retina and uveitis diseases and has been invited to lecture at regional and international conferences like the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Congress, Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting, and the International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS) Congress.
Dr Thng is concurrently inaugural co-chair of the IOIS Young Members Section and co-director of the IOIS Uveitis Course. Since 2020, he has been actively pursuing clinical ophthalmology research and has authored and co-authored papers published in prestigious journals such as American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Eye, and JAMA Ophthalmology.
