Biodata

Dr Aw is currently Head, Department of Dental Surgery and Senior Consultant Orthodontist. The department maintains a strong focus on hospital-based dentistry with shared management and adjunctive procedures for Geriatric, Oncology, ENT and Trauma patients. Its talented staff have a concentration in Special Care and Geriatric Dentistry, Multi-disciplinary Orthodontics and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Sleep Medicine along with screening and preventive care for medical and surgical interventions.

His clinical practice is in Orthodontics and the co-management of post-traumatic dental reconstruction as well as interdisciplinary Orthognathic surgical cases. He obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Faculty of Dentistry, NUS, and his professional qualifications and exit certifications via the UK Royal Surgical Colleges and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He is a member of the Institute of Learning and Teaching in Medicine UK and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK. He is a Visiting Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, NUS. His care philosophy is to provide clinical diagnosis and care that upholds patient autonomy through holistic assessment of clinical needs and incorporation of the patient’s situation and circumstances.

He has held various posts in the Chapter of Dental Surgeons, Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and was the first President of the College of Dental Surgeons, Singapore, having taken it through the process of incorporation. He co-authored the dental specialist clinical training pathway that formed the basis of the Dental Specialist Register. He subsequently chaired the first Orthodontic Specialty Assessment Committee and the first Geriatric and Special Needs Dentistry Workgroup. A 2-term elected member of the Singapore Dental Council, Singapore Dental Association Mediation Panel and current Lay Member of the Singapore Medical Council’s Complaints panel, he has undergone training by the Singapore Mediation Centre.

During COVID-19, he was seconded to MOH and appointed Deputy Taskforce Commander (Medical) in the MOM Joint Task Force (Assurance), overseeing medical aspects of the management of the epidemic in the Migrant Worker’s Dormitories. He was awarded the PPA(P) COVID-19 for this effort.
