Dr Leong Soh Sum, Helen is Family Physician, Senior Consultant at NHG Polyclinics. She graduated from the National University of Singapore with an MBBS degree in 1989, Master of Medicine (Family Medicine) in 1996 and Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy in 2000. She is registered with the Family Medicine Accreditation Board.
To further enhance her expertise, Dr Leong was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) awards in 2001 and 2010, which allowed her to complete advanced clinical attachment at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Radcliffe Infirmary (UK) and Joslin Diabetes Center (USA) respectively. With a strong commitment to patient care, she has developed a keen interest in Diabetes Mellitus, making significant contributions to the field.
As a distinguished expert, Dr Leong is Fellow of the College of Family Physicians, Singapore and Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. She is also an active member of the Endocrinology Specialty Advisory Workgroup at NHG Polyclinics, playing a key role in care of diabetes mellitus and lipid disorders.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr Leong served as clinical tutor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), from 1999 to 2006 and was Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine, NUS, in 2007 and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine, National University Health System between 2008 and 2011.
In the area of leadership, Dr Leong has taken on key administrative roles. She previously served as Director, Clinical Services Division at NHG Polyclinics, where she was instrumental in overseeing various sections on Professional Standards, Medical Manpower, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Allied Health Professionals and Health Information Management. Her key contributions were in areas such as establishing the framework for Chronic Disease Management, development of disease registries for chronic diseases, enhancing the framework on professional standards in quality care and medication utilization. Currently, she assists with the development of chronic disease management, focusing on areas such as medication utilization and development of electronic medical records.
Recognising her outstanding contributions to public healthcare, Dr Leong has received accolades such as Teachers’ Award (College of Family Physicians) in 2004, Excellence in Service Award (Silver) in 2009, National Healthcare Group Outstanding Citizenship Award in 2009, MOH Health IT Excellence Award in 2014, Distinguished Educators’ Award (College of Family Physicians) in 2015, Long Service Award (NHG Polyclinics) in 2021, Long Service Medal (National Day Award) in 2020 and Covid-19 Resilience Medal (National Award) in 2023. These recognitions reflect her dedication to advancing medical excellence and improving patient outcomes.
