Biodata
Professor Yip is the Education Director, Education Development Office; Head and Senior Consultant at the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Department of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; and Clinical Director at Admiralty Medical Centre. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), and Associate Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
In Ophthalmology, his previous appointments as the Past President of the Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2010-2012) and Past Vice-President of the College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore (2014-2016), attest to his high professional standing. He has 60 journal publications and written five book chapters. Internationally, He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2008), the American Academy of Ophthalmology International Ophthalmologist Education Award (2011) and the Eye and Visionary Award (2012) for his contributions in ophthalmic education. His sub-specialty interests include lacrimal, eyelid and aesthetic peri-ocular surgeries.
He completed a Master degree in Health Professional Education (MHPE) from Maastricht University in 2020 and topped his cohort to graduate with a Cum Laude designation. He is a highly reputed Clinician Educator and Medical Education Leader. His excellence in teaching has also won him multiple teaching awards including the Dean's award for Teaching Excellence (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021) and Special Recognition Award as a role model (2016, 2021) from NUS, NHG Health Education Award (2020) and NTU Honoured Faculty Award (2021). He has been the president of the College of Clinician Educators, Academy of Medicine Singapore since 2022.
As an academic staff NUS and NTU, he has been active in research on cognition-enhanced learning such as mental rehearsal and cognitive load modulation to improve teaching and learning. He has innovated and implemented new medical education models (such as the Simulated Pathological Eye Case Scenario, a novel case-based teaching incorporating mind-mapping and horizontal integration of clinical and foundation sciences) and assessments tools (such as the Micro-CEX, a quicker, focused formative assessment than mini-CEX). His significant contribution to medical undergraduate education to better prepare them for primary eye care was recognised by NUS with the Special Recognition Award as a role model teacher (2016, 2021), Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence (2017 and 2020), NTU Certificate of Honour for Inspirational Mentorship (2021), and NTU LKC Medicine Special Recognition Award (2023).
He is active in Medical Education Research, and holds many grants for his research projects: one from Yishun Health (2013), five from NHG (2018, 2020 and 2024) and one from NTU Medical Education Research and Scholarship Unit (2022). He received several accolades of awards for his Medical Education Research work at local and regional conferences. At the Singapore Health & Biomedical Congress, he received the Health Professional Education Research Investigator award (Gold Medal, 2017, 2021, 2022; Silver Medal, 2018) and Best Poster Award (2021, 2023). At the Asia Pacific Medical Education Conferences [APMEC], he obtained the Merit Awards (2016, 2017, and 2019) and runner-up prize for Best Poster Category (2018).
