Biodata
Dr Tan obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1999 and received his surgical residency training at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency in the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix. He achieved Board Certification with the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery in 2006. He joined Alexandra Hospital in 2006 with the team that prepared the transition to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in 2010. He further subspecialised with a clinical fellowship in liver surgery and liver transplantation at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, returning in 2011.
He is a founding member and executive committee member for the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (Singapore).
His passion for teaching and the development of minimally invasive surgical training and accreditation led to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital becoming the first Asian testing centre for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery Programme through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
He serves as Clinical Assistant Professor with the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Senior Lecturer with Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, and faculty member and mentor for the NHG Health General Surgery and Surgery in General Residency Programmes.
His interests outside the hospital include humanitarian medical training and surgical assistance in rural and austere settings in South East Asia.
