Dr Marc Ong obtained his medical degree from National University of Singapore in 2010, received his postgraduate Masters of Medicine (Surgery) degree in 2015, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2018 and was accorded Specialist accreditation in General Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in the same year.
In September 2025, Dr Marc was appointed Head of the Department of General Surgery at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
Dr Marc is a general surgeon with dual sub-specialty expertise in Hernia Surgery and Breast Cancer Surgery. He was awarded the Ministry of Health – Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Award in 2023 and furthered his training in Tokyo, Japan. His breast surgery fellowship was under Prof Hisamitsu Zaha and Dr Tomoko Ogawa focused on oncoplastic and minimally invasive techniques. He has been an invited speaker at international breast cancer conferences.
For hernia surgery, Dr Marc trained at St Luke's International Hospital under Dr Gen Shimada and Dr Taketo Matsubara. As the founding lead of the Hernia Surgery Service at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, he heads a team of surgeons and is actively engaged in training specialists locally and internationally. He has been invited to conduct workshops and proctor surgeons in countries including Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan. He serves an invited faculty at the IRCAD training institute in Taiwan and is a member of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) and the Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA).
Dr Marc is a senior clinical lecturer at both the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He has received several teaching awards, including the Dean’s Honour Roll Award for Teaching Excellence (2019/2020) from NUS Medicine. He has served as Associate Program Director for the National Healthcare Group General Surgery Residency Program and authored the surgical textbook "Mastery in General Surgery Short Cases" (2022) for medical students and surgical residents.
Beyond the operating theatre, Dr Marc enjoys an active life with his wife and their two daughters. He enjoys jogging, tennis, and billiards, and finds relaxation through hobbies including colour pencil art and making pasta.
