Having obtained his MBBS degree in 1989, Dr Lim served as a doctor in the fields of Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Emergency Medicine before undergoing specialist training in Malaysia and Australia. After obtaining specialist qualifications, he served as an Anaesthesiologist and Intensivist in both public and private hospital settings.

He is well-versed in anaesthesia for General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, Dental Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Paediatric Surgery. He is also extensively involved in treating patients with acute pain, resuscitation, and other critical care services.

His non-clinical involvement includes teaching medical students, Master's students, nurses, and paramedics. He served as an examiner for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine student intake exercise for many years. Currently, he has served in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for more than 12 years.​
