Dr Joshua Decruz is a Consultant in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), a member of the NHG Health (NHG). His surgical expertise covers the wide spectrum of spine surgery, and is particularly passionate about minimally invasive surgery (MIS), providing the whole range of techniques, from traditional tubular microscopic surgery to various endoscopic techniques, which includes, uniportal and biportal endoscopic spine surgery.
He incorporates cutting edge technology, like computer aided navigation into his surgical techniques. This enables him to provide precise solutions for complex spinal conditions. Dr Decruz believes in meticulous diagnostic and therapeutic discussions, followed by the conception of a personalised solution involving multidisciplinary services. His only aim is to guide each patient and their loved ones through their treatment journey and recovery to health.
Dr Decruz graduated from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2012 with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D) degree. He completed the NHG Health (NHG) Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program in 2021. During this period, he completed his membership examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and obtained Masters of Medicine (Orthopaedic Surgery) from the National University of Singapore. He is an accredited Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Orthopaedic Surgery) and Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore (FAMS).
He received his initial spine specialist training from 3 institutions, namely, National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital, members of the National University Health System (NUHS), and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, another member of NHG.
Dr Decruz was awarded the prestigious AO Spine Asia Pacific fellowship to be trained in complex spine surgery in Germany (Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technische Universität München (TUM)) and endoscopic spine surgery (Schön Klinik München Harlaching).
Besides pursuing clinical excellence, Dr Decruz is passionate about education and academic teaching. He holds the academic position of Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Adjunct Lecturer with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. He is actively involved in a range of spine and orthopaedic surgery research and has published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is an active presenter in local, regional and international conferences and scientific meetings.
In his free time, he is a keen innovator and was awarded the Clinician Innovator Preparatory Programme (CiPP) by the NHG-Centre for Medical Technologies and Innovation in 2022.
