Dr Ruth Yap obtained her basic medical degree in 2018 from the National University of Singapore, where she was placed on the Dean's List for three out of five undergraduate years and graduated with honours. She was awarded the Tan Choon Kim Book Prize, College of Family Physicians Singapore Family Medicine Prize and the Singapore Medical Association Bronze prize for her academic achievements in medical school.

She underwent internal medicine residency training and subsequently obtained the MRCP UK and Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 2020. In 2025, she completed her specialist training in Rheumatology.

Dr Yap served as Chief Resident of the Internal medicine programme as well as on the NHG Health Residency Executive Community from 2021-2022. She is a clinical tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and has received the NUS Medicine Junior Doctor Teaching Award for Academic Year 2018/2019 and NHG Health Teaching Award for Junior Doctors in 2022.
