Duct Ectasia

Overview

As women reach menopause, the milk ducts behind the nipple naturally become wider and shorter. This is called duct ectasia.

This is a normal part of aging and isn't something to worry about.

Causes

This happens naturally as part of getting older, especially during menopause

Signs & Symptoms

You might notice:

  • Fluid collecting in the widened ducts
  • The area might become irritated
  • It can become sore and painful
  • Discharge from the nipple (thick or watery)
  • The discharge might be clear or bloodstained
  • A small lump behind the nipple
  • Some scarring of the tissue
  • Your nipple might turn inward

Prevention

  • Stop smoking (biggest risk factor)
  • Avoid nipple injury/trauma
  • Maintain good breast hygiene

Detection & Treatment

Your doctor will check through:

  • Breast examination
  • Mammogram and/or ultrasound scan

Treatment:

  • Most cases clear up on their own without treatment
  • If troublesome discharge continues, you might need minor surgery to:
    • Remove the affected duct
    • Remove all major ducts

Care Management

What you should know:

  • Having duct ectasia doesn't increase your risk of breast cancer
  • Keep checking your breasts regularly
  • Tell your doctor about any new changes
