Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Overview
An enlarged prostate can lead to lower urinary tract symptoms. If untreated, it can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems.
Causes
The prostate gland grows throughout a man's life. This continued growth might enlarge the prostate large enough to cause urinary symptoms or to significantly block urine flow.
Signs & Symptoms
What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate. This is often one of the most noticeable signs, especially during nighttime.
- Difficulty starting urination. You may need to wait or strain before urination begins.
- Weak urine stream or stream that stops and starts. The flow of urine might be less powerful, and it may start and stop during urination.
- Dribbling at the end of urination. You may continue to dribble after you think you're finished urinating.
- Incomplete emptying of bladder. You may still feel the need to urinate even after you've finished.
Detection & Treatment
Diagnosis
- Abdominal exam
- Digital rectal exam
- Urine test
- Blood test for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
