Perinatal Depression

This session will provide GPs with a practical overview of perinatal depression, aiming at developing a basic understanding and recognition of this important condition as well as its management. It will integrate medical and psychological approaches, with a focus on brief, GP friendly strategies to support mothers during the critical antenatal and postnatal periods. 

Learning Outcome:

  • Understand and recognise perinatal depression in primary care
  • Provide brief and effective psychoeducation with regards to perinatal depression
  • Apply simple psychological strategies in consultations to enable practical management of symptoms
  • Support early parent–infant attachment
  • Awareness of available treatment approaches
  • Identify red flags requiring urgent specialist input
