About

Adjunct Professor Steven Thng is Deputy Executive Director and Senior Consultant Dermatologist at the National Skin Centre (NSC), Singapore. His clinical practice focuses on pigmentary disorders, eczema and non-invasive skin imaging. He heads NSC’s pigmentary disorders unit and is the primary surgeon for cellular grafting in vitiligo. He has contributed to clinical management guidelines for conditions such as vitiligo and melasma and has introduced novel treatment approaches. He is also internationally recognised in pigmentary disorders and is active in global committees and research groups.

In eczema, Prof Thng is the principal investigator of the national Atopic Dermatitis Research Programme, which aims to better understand eczema in the local population and improve management of this challenging condition.

He is also a pioneer in non-invasive skin imaging and leads the confocal clinic at NSC, the first of its kind in the region, offering patients the option of diagnosing skin cancer without traditional invasive biopsy.

Alongside his clinical and research work, Prof Thng serves as Programme Director of the NHG Dermatology Residency Programme and Education Director at NSC, overseeing the training of future dermatologists. He holds academic appointments as Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, and Clinical Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Beyond clinical practice, he contributes significantly to dermatology research and innovation. He is Chief Dermatologist at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS) and Clinical Director of the Translational Research Office at the National Healthcare Group, supporting research collaborations and the development of new skincare products.

He is a regular speaker at regional and international conferences and is actively involved in mentoring residents and young doctors, with a strong focus on advancing dermatology through education, research and clinical practice.

Adjunct Professor Steven Thng Tien Guan has received wide recognition for his contributions to clinical care, research, education and public service at both national and international levels. His honours include the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for his contributions during COVID-19, the Healthcare Humanity Award and the Excellence in Public Service Award, as well as multiple Singapore Clinician Investigator Awards and the NMRC Clinician Scientist Award. He has also received numerous NHG Excellence in Action Awards, the Outstanding Citizenship Award, Innovation Award and multiple Service Champion Awards at NSC. In education, he has been recognised with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the NHG Education Leaders Award. His earlier accolades include the United Nations INTERFET Medal and the LETTERMAN Award in the United States, reflecting sustained contributions across clinical excellence, research, education and service.
