Adjunct Professor Steven Thng is Deputy Executive Director and Senior Consultant Dermatologist at the National Skin Centre (NSC), Singapore. His clinical practice centres on pigmentary disorders, eczema and non-invasive skin imaging. He is currently the head of NSC’s pigmentary disorders unit and is the primary surgeon for cellular graft for vitiligo. He is instrumental in the development of clinical management guidelines for condition like vitiligo and melasma, pioneering the many novel treatment options for patients suffering from these diseases and is active in research in both conditions. Prof Thng is also renown internationally in the field of pigmentary disorders and is an active member of international committees as well as research groups.
In the field of eczema, Prof Thng is currently the principal investigator of the national Atopic Dermatitis Research Program, exploring a better understanding of eczema in local population and improve management of this difficult to treat disorder.
Prof Thng is also the pioneer for the use of non-invasive imaging for skin applications and is in charge of the confocal clinic, which is the first of tis kind regionally offering patients the option of diagnosing skin cancer without the traditional invasive biopsy.
In the midst of his busy clinical and research duties, Prof Thng also serves as Programme Director of the NHG Dermatology Residency Programme and Education Director at NSC, where he oversees the training and development of future dermatologists. He holds academic appointments as Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, and Clinical Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
Beyond clinical work, Prof Thng plays a significant role in dermatology research and innovation. He serves as Chief Dermatologist at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS) and Clinical Director of the Translational Research Office at the National Healthcare Group, supporting research collaborations and the development of new skincare products.
He is a regular speaker at regional and international conferences and is actively involved in mentoring residents and young doctors. His work reflects a strong interest in advancing dermatology through education, research, and real-world clinical application.
Adjunct Professor Steven Thng Tien Guan has received wide recognition for his contributions to clinical care, research, education and public service at both national and international levels. His honours include the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for his contributions during COVID-19, the Healthcare Humanity Award and the Excellence in Public Service Award, as well as multiple Singapore Clinician Investigator Awards and the NMRC Clinician Scientist Award. He has also received numerous NHG Excellence in Action Awards, the Outstanding Citizenship Award, Innovation Award and multiple Service Champion Awards at NSC. In education, he has been recognised with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the NHG Education Leaders Award. His earlier accolades include the United Nations INTERFET Medal and the LETTERMAN Award in the United States, reflecting sustained contributions across clinical excellence, research, education and service.
