Assistant Professor Thiruchelvam “Jega” Jegathesan is an Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge fellowship-trained Senior Consultant Urologist with a focused practice in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), enlarged prostate treatment, HoLEP, GreenLight laser prostate surgery, minimally invasive BPH therapies, TURP and stone surgery. He is also Assistant Professor and Principal Lead for Urology at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
He completed Urology residency training within the National Healthcare Group and underwent fellowship training in HoLEP and advanced BPH surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, United Kingdom, under Dr Tevita Aho. His fellowship training included complex BPH management involving very large prostates, patients on blood thinners, redo surgery after prior TURP or UroLift, and ejaculation-sparing HoLEP techniques. He also completed an observership in Sydney, Australia, with Dr Henry Woo, focused on GreenLight photoselective vaporisation of the prostate (PVP).
At Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Asst Prof Jegathesan is the Lead for BPH and established the hospital’s Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) service. He has performed more than 200 HoLEP procedures and more than 150 GreenLight PVP procedures. He routinely manages complex BPH, including men with very large prostates, some larger than 300cc, redo BPH surgeries, large bladder stones, urinary retention, catheter dependence, blood-thinner use and patients seeking alternatives to long-term medication.
His practice combines formal fellowship training, high-volume BPH surgical experience, academic leadership and the ability to offer the full suite of BPH treatments, including TURP, Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (“HoLEP”), GreenLight laser prostate surgery, Rezūm water vapour therapy, UroLift and iTind. He individualises treatment according to prostate size, symptom severity, urinary retention status, bleeding risk, sexual function priorities and recovery goals. For selected suitable patients, he also offers true day-surgery BPH treatment, where fit patients may be discharged home on the same day after laser surgery.
He holds several BPH-focused leadership roles in Singapore, including the MOH ACE Clinical Guideline Expert Group for BPH, the MOH National Value-Based Care BPH Clinician Workgroup, and NHG/TTSH Value-Based Care Lead for BPH. He has delivered local and international talks on various topics relating to BPH, and regularly hosts observerships for overseas doctors in laser prostate enucleation.
He has also presented his clinical findings at international conferences on alternate laser modalities for HoLEP, as well as techniques to improve the safety of morcellation during HoLEP through the standard use of intraoperative ultrasound.
His clinical focus is on evidence-based, individualised BPH care for men seeking the most appropriate treatment with the full suite of BPH treatment options.
