Dr John Kan currently serves as a consultant at the NHG Eye Institute (NHGEI) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he is also Deputy Head of Clinical Services, Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr Kan completed his undergraduate medical training and graduated with honours from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He received his postgraduate specialty Ophthalmology training under the ACGME-I (American Council of Graduate Medical Education - International) accredited NHG Health Ophthalmology Residency Program. He was awarded the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2022 and successfully completed the Ophthalmology Specialist Exit Examination in 2024, clinching the gold medal for being the best candidate in Cataract Surgery and Comprehensive Ophthalmology. He is a fellow of both the Academy of Medicine (Singapore) and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (United Kingdom).

During his residency training, he undertook leadership roles as Chief Resident and Chief Senior Resident and received the NHGEI Outstanding Resident Award in 2021. He served as a member of the NHG Residents' Council from 2022 to 2023 and was subsequently selected for and completed the Singapore Chief Residency Program under the Healthcare Leadership College in 2023. He is also involved in community service and has participated in various projects locally and in the region.

Dr Kan's areas of clinical interest include standard and complex cataract and anterior segment surgery and General Ophthalmology. He performs both conventional as well as femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery and uses a range of intraocular lens implants including advanced technology intraocular lenses. As part of the anterior segment subspecialty service, he is also regularly involved in the clinical evaluation of new intraocular lenses. He is active in research and has published in multiple peer reviewed ophthalmology journals and presented his work at multiple renowned conferences, both regionally and internationally.

Dr Kan has a keen interest in teaching and is routinely involved in education and mentoring of residents, nurses and allied health professionals.  He is also passionate about teaching medical students and serves as a Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and as an Adjunct Lecturer with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.
