About

Dr Jared Ching is a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the NHG Eye Institute (NHGEI), Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in the management of complex retinal diseases, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous haemorrhage, and surgical complications, alongside a strong focus on minimally invasive retinal surgery and translational innovation.

Dr Ching holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Plymouth and completed his medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Bristol following a First-Class Honours Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) from the University of East Anglia. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and completed specialist training in the United Kingdom, obtaining his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Ophthalmology.

He has undertaken advanced subspecialty training through Surgical Retina Fellowships in Norwich, Cambridge, and Bristol, as well as an Ocular Oncology Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he retains an honorary research affiliation. His academic training includes an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, with research conducted at the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair and the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit.

Dr Ching has an active international academic and research portfolio. He is:

  • Principal Investigator with A*STAR, Singapore, developing translational retinal research programmes
  • Adjunct Research Fellow at the Singapore Eye Research Institute
  • Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford, where he co-leads development of novel ophthalmic surgical devices
  • Lecturer at Yokohama City University, Japan, focusing on micro-invasive retinal therapeutics

His work spans robotic and micro-invasive retinal surgery, ocular oncology, and retinal cell biology, with multiple patents filed and over £1 million in research funding secured in the UK. He has previously received competitive international research grants (including the Keeler Scholarship, TFC Frost Research Grant)  and multiple awards in Singapore including the NMRC New Investigator Award (2026), CMTi-NHIC Innovation Grant, and CHI AI Digital Prototyping Grant, as well as a Clinician-Scientist Award from NHG and LKC totaling over $0.5 million, supporting innovation in surgical technology and cell biology. He has been appointed a Visiting Scientist at RIKEN in Japan and awarded an Invitational JSPS Fellowship to undertake basic and translational research at Kobe Eye Hospital, Japan.

Dr Ching has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and collaborates internationally on cell biology, clinical trials, artificial intelligence in ophthalmology, and novel therapeutic devices.
