Overview

The Department of Psychology provides a wide range of psychological services, including psychological therapy and psychological assessments that are tailored to help patients with a range of psychological health problems, cognitive difficulties, as well as coping or adjustment difficulties due to life stressors or health conditions.

Therapy Services

  • Psychological therapy is a non-pharmacological approach to mental health issues or life stressors.
  • Our psychologistsoffer therapy for mental health conditions, anxiety and mood disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, anger and stress management, grief and bereavement, personality disorders, sleep-wake disorders, chronic diseases and pain management, lifestyle modification and weight management, adjustment and coping difficulties, social or interpersonal difficulties, behaviour management, disorders of gut-brain interaction, and other psychological issues or difficulties secondary to medical conditions.
  • Both inpatient as well as outpatient services are available. Different therapy approaches are used depending on patient's needs.
  • The most common therapy approach is cognitive behavioural therapy. Other therapy approaches which may be used, as appropriate, including acceptance commitment therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and emotion-focused therapy.
  • At times, supportive counselling or learning coping strategies might be sufficient to help patients deal with recent life stressors.

Assessment Services

  • Our psychologists offer neuropsychological assessments for various conditions such as neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurocognitive disorders (e.g., dementia and mild cognitive impairment), substance abuse, mental health conditions (e.g., schizophrenia), etc.
  • Common referral reasons include assessment for diagnostic purposes (e.g., assessment for possible dementia), cognitive characterization to understand current cognitive strengths and weaknesses to inform management, cognitive baseline to facilitate serial assessment to track changes over time or to inform on effectiveness of treatment, as well as suitability for return to work and return to school.
  • Neuropsychological assessments can also be conducted to assess one's capacity to make decisions and for medico-legal purposes.
  • Referrals could also be made from your doctor to assist in cognitive rehabilitation and to learn suitable compensatory strategies to cope with cognitive difficulties in domains such as attention, processing speed, memory or executive function.

Referral

We value the importance of early access to psychological care to help individuals optimize coping and adjustment to prevent worsening of psychological issues. All referrals have to come from a medical doctor and you can approach your primary doctor to raise a referral to the following psychological services:

For outpatient cases, all cases are seen on an appointment basis and we do not take in walk-in cases.
