TTSH Nutrition and Dietetics
Overview

The Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital provides comprehensive nutritional care and expert dietary guidance to support your health and recovery.

Our professional team of dietitians collaborates closely with medical specialists to deliver evidence-based, personalised nutrition solutions for various medical conditions. We specialise in dietary management for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, renal conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, malnutrition, and cancer. Our services extend to those requiring specialised nutrition support, such as patients in intensive care units (ICU), those recovering from major surgery, patients requiring tube feeding, and and patients undergoing weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery).

Inpatient and Outpatient Services

Our department's approach emphasises individualised care that considers each patient's medical requirements, cultural preferences, and lifestyle factors. Through detailed nutritional assessments and tailored dietary plans, we ensure that our recommendations are both clinically appropriate and practical for daily implementation. We are committed to empowering our patients with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve optimal nutritional health and enhance their quality of life through proper nutrition.

During the dietitian consultation, we will conduct a thorough nutrition assessment, which includes reviewing your medical history, current diet, lifestyle habits, and personal food preferences. Based on this assessment, we will work with you to create a personalised nutrition care plan that fits your medical needs and daily routine.

Our dietitians provide expert dietary guidance through individual consultations for various medical conditions, including:

  • Diabetes management
  • Weight management and bariatric surgery (before and after weight loss surgery)
  • Heart conditions (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure)
  • Kidney diseases (chronic kidney disease, pre-dialysis, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis)
  • Digestive system disorders (irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease, Crohns disease, diverticular disease)
  • Malnutrition (loss of appetite, poor diet, unintentional weight loss)
  • Nutrition support for patients recovering from major surgeries
  • Cancer and nutrition support during treatment
  • Swallowing difficulties on texture-modified diets or tube feeding

We understand that changing eating habits can be challenging, so comprehensive support is provided through individual consultations and/or group education sessions. Our dietitians provide professional guidance on therapeutic diets, dietary strategies, meal planning, and teach you practical skills like reading food labels, planning balanced meals, and making healthier choices when eating out.

We work closely with your medical team to ensure you receive the best possible nutrition care throughout your health journey. Our team is here to provide professional guidance and support in a way that's practical and easy to understand.

Food Service

Our dietitians also play a vital role in the hospital's food service operations, serving as consultants in therapeutic nutrition. They develop and maintain evidence-based guidelines for therapeutic diets and collaborate closely with our Food and Beverage (F&B) Services team to ensure that patient meals meet specific medical requirements and nutritional needs. This partnership ensures that the hospital's food service delivery aligns with clinical nutrition standards while catering to diverse dietary requirements of our patients.

Education

Our dietitians play a vital role in nurturing future healthcare professionals through comprehensive educational programmes and mentorship opportunities. We partner with local and international educational institutions of higher learning to provide:

  • Structured clinical training for dietetics undergraduates from both local universities and Singaporean students studying overseas
  • Mentorship through food service internships and industry attachments
  • Guidance for final year projects and research initiatives for food science and nutrition students
  • Learning opportunities through observational attachments for students
  • Specialised teaching sessions for the local undergraduate dietetics programmes
  • Collaborative interprofessional education sessions for medical and nursing students

Through these educational initiatives, our experienced team shares their expertise and practical insights, helping to shape competent and compassionate healthcare professionals who will contribute to the future of nutrition care.

Research

Our department actively contributes to advancing nutrition science through clinical research and quality improvement initiatives. Our dietitians conduct and collaborate on evidence-based research projects in nutrition and dietetics, aimed at enhancing patient care outcomes and improving service delivery. This commitment to research ensures that our clinical practices remain current and aligned with the latest scientific evidence, ultimately benefiting our patients' nutritional care and overall health outcomes.
