Established in 1997, the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) performs a wide variety of diagnostic tests on blood, body fluids and tissues to help doctors diagnose, monitor and screen for diseases. 

Our team is dedicated to the provision of excellent quality service characterised by reliable, efficient and precise work which leads to accurate diagnoses. Continuous quality improvement with regular monitoring of tests and equipment and routine audits ensures compliance to the highest standards. 

The laboratory is accredited under the College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation Program and participates in External Quality Assurance Programmes provided by:

Our Services

Phlebotomy

Our phlebotomists are trained to draw blood from patients for various tests and procedures, and thereafter are responsible for proper handling, labelling and dispatching of blood specimens. Phlebotomists provide essential support for blood collection for inpatients in TTSH, NCID and Renci Community Hospital. 

Central Processing 

Central Processing is the first point contact for samples within the laboratory. Samples are received, sorted, ordered onto our information system before being distributed to the respective laboratories. Central Processing also handle enquiries on test availability, specimen requirements and results.

Blood Transfusion Service

The Blood Transfusion team ensures safe and efficient delivery of blood and blood products. Services include blood grouping, antibody screen, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin testing, cold agglutinin testing, investigation of transfusion reactions, and the provision of blood and blood products.

Clinical Chemistry 

Our Clinical Chemistry laboratory provides essential services such as electrolytes, renal function, liver function, cholesterol levels, glucose, thyroid levels and cancer markers. Specialised testing including urine catecholamines and metanephrines, beta-lactam antibiotic concentration, myeloma studies and xanthochromia assays are also offered routinely. 

Haematology

The Haematology laboratory provides analytical services for full blood count and differentials, blood film microscopy analysis, bone marrow studies, coagulation studies, thalassemia studies and flow cytometry.

Clinical Microbiology

Our Clinical Microbiology Laboratory supports medical teams with the diagnosis of infectious diseases and provides guidance for appropriate antibiotic therapy. We provide a comprehensive range of testing including bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology and molecular microbiology.
