Medical Short Stay Ward
Overview

The Medical Short Stay Ward (MSSW) provides acute medical care for selected suitable patients who are likely to benefit from rapid assessment, fast investigations, early treatment, and an earlier discharge plan. Our goal is to support patients to be safely discharged within 72 hours whenever appropriate.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. Who is MSSW for?

MSSW is for patients assessed to need short inpatient medical care, where the team expects that investigations and treatment can be completed quickly and safely. Placement into MSSW is based on clinical assessment and suitability, not patient request.

2. How long will I stay in MSSW?

The goal is discharge within 72 hours, but this depends on your condition, test results, response to treatment, and home support arrangements.

3. Who will be looking after me?

You’ll be cared for by a multidisciplinary team. MSSW is led by Internal Medicine specialists, who may collaborate with Allied Health services and other specialists (when needed) to help shorten turnaround times for care processes.

4. What happens if I’m not well enough to go home within 72 hours?

If you need a longer inpatient stay or more specialised care, your team will arrange transfer to the most appropriate ward/service. This may include Yishun Community Hospital or KTPH@home or other inpatient wards.

5. Will I have follow-up after discharge?

If needed, follow-up may be arranged (for example, an early discharge clinic for selected patients).
