Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1.    Am I suitable for GSSW?
GSSW is suitable for selected older adults who require inpatient care but may not need a prolonged hospital stay. Patients are assessed by the healthcare team before admission to GSSW. Suitability depends on the patient’s medical condition, care needs, rehabilitation potential and discharge support.

2.    What care will I receive in GSSW?
In GSSW, the team provides early assessment and treatment for your acute medical condition, while also looking at other factors that may affect your recovery. This may include your mobility, memory and thinking, nutrition, medications, mood, home support and caregiver needs. The aim is to provide coordinated, person-centred care that supports your recovery and helps you return safely to your usual living environment when you are ready.

3.    How long will I stay in GSSW?
GSSW is designed for short-stay care. For suitable patients, the team aims to complete care within about 5 days, but this is not a fixed length of stay. You may be discharged earlier if you are ready, or you may need a longer stay or transfer to another ward depending on your condition, recovery and care needs.

4.    Will my family or caregiver be involved in my care?
Yes. Family members and caregivers are important partners in care. They may be invited to share information through an electronic caregiver assessment and, where needed, through discussions with the care team. This helps us understand your usual abilities, home situation, care needs and the support you may need after leaving hospital.
