Adult Reconstruction Service
Overview

The Adult Reconstruction Service or the Joint Replacement Service is centred on restoring function and improving quality of life in patients with end stage joint diseases.

Our focus is on:

  • Pain eradication: Through a multi-prong approach of physiotherapy, medication, pain management and surgery.
  • Functional restoration: Returning patients to their daily activities, hobbies and work with minimal downtime.
  • Efficiency and safety: Minimising hospital stay duration while reducing complication risks like infection or blood clots.

On top of the core service of primary joint replacements, we also handle:

  • Complex primary arthroplasty: Managing patients with significant deformities, underlying bone loss, post-traumatic arthritis.
  • Revision surgery: Managing patients with failing implants including loosening, fracture around existing implants and infection.

We comprise of a dedicated, multidisciplinary team:

  • Surgical leads: Arthroplasty specialists focused exclusively on hip/knee reconstruction.
  • Anaesthesia and pain management: Specialists in regional anaesthesia who focus on motor-sparing blocks and opioid-sparing protocols.
  • Rehabilitation specialists: Physiotherapists and occupational therapists integrated into pre-surgery, and post-surgery phases to ensure readiness for surgery and rapid recovery after.
  • Medical collaborative care: Need-based medical specialty involvement to optimise any medical issues.
  • Specialised nursing: Meeting the dedicated nursing needs of patients before, during and after surgery to enhance recovery.
  • Care coordinators: Point of contact for patients throughout care continuum.
  • Community care partners: Ensuring patients with various care needs are taken care of after surgery.

The Patient Journey: A High-Value Care Model

We are fully embarked on the Value-Based Care (VBC) delivery model that prioritises quality of patient outcomes and cost efficiency.

Our patients follow an optimised clinical care pathway based on best available evidence. This strategy stretches over a few key milestones in the patient journey:

  • Before surgery: Patient education, prehabilitation and optimisation of chronic medical problems.
  • During surgery: Prioritisation of tissue-sparing techniques, tailoring each procedure to the individual to ensure a smoother, less painful recovery.
  • After surgery: Enhanced recovery protocols focusing on early mobilisation and multimodal opioid sparing approach to pain management. We use data-driven insights to track recovery outcomes and constantly improve our care.

Beyond patient-centred care, we are also committed to research and medical education to ensure our patients have access to the latest breakthrough treatment techniques.
