Wheelchair Transfer: Bed and Car
Overview

Safe and effective wheelchair transfers are essential for maintaining mobility, independence, and dignity for individuals with reduced physical function, while also protecting caregivers from injury.

This article provides caregiver training videos that demonstrate a range of transfer techniques suited to different levels of ability and support needs. These include single-caregiver pivot transfers, two-person assisted transfers, and structured methods such as the full forward lean pivot approach, which focuses on guided movement and proper body mechanics.

The use of assistive devices, including transfer belts, is also introduced to improve safety and control. In addition, practical guidance on car transfers using front, side, and two-person assistance is provided to support safe community mobility. Across all techniques, emphasis is placed on clear communication, correct positioning, and coordinated movement to reduce fall risk and physical strain, while promoting comfort and active participation for care recipients.
