Periductal Mastitis
Overview
This is inflammation (swelling and irritation) of the ducts under the nipple and dark area around it.
It can affect women of any age but is most common in:
- Women aged 20-40 years
- People who smoke
Causes
Main causes:
- Smoking (biggest risk)
- Nipple piercing
- Injury to nipple area
Bacteria can get in through:
- Cracked or damaged nipples
- Pierced nipples
- Infection spreading from skin
Signs & Symptoms
You might notice:
- Pain and redness around nipple
- Fluid coming from nipple (might be bloody)
- Nipple pulling inward
- A painful lump might form
- Tender lump under dark area of nipple
- Flu-like symptoms in some cases
Prevention
To help prevent it:
- Stop smoking
- Avoid nipple injury
- Keep good hygiene
- Take good care of nipple piercings if you have them
Detection & Treatment
Your doctor will check through:
- Physical examination
- Mammogram
- Ultrasound scan
- Might need tissue sample
Treatment includes:
- Antibiotics for 10-14 days
- Pain relief medicine
- Warm compresses
- Surgery if an abscess forms
If you develop an abscess:
- It will need draining with local anesthetic
- Regular dressing changes
Care Management
Daily care:
- Take all antibiotics as prescribed
- Go to all follow-up appointments
- Stop smoking to prevent it coming back
- Watch for any changes
Long-term:
- Might come back if you keep smoking
- Check your breasts regularly
- See doctor quickly if symptoms return
