This Mentoring session including elearning components were specifically designed for Juior Clinicians taking on roles as a mentor and educator in NHG Polyclinics through a new BEAM Mentoring initiative commenced in 2025. Identified Mentors are asked to go through this workshop to obtain the pre-requisite skills to be a Mentor to other clinicians or doctors

Course Information
Learning Outcomes
  1. Explain the importance of mentoring in professional development
  2. Differentiate the various roles including Coaching , Mentoring including the context where applied
  3. Recognise the states of a mentoring relationship including the transitions between them
  4. Define the roles and responsibilities of mentors and mentees in fostering a successful mentoring relationship.
  5. Develop and practice key mentoring skills including:
    1. Build Trusting Professional  Relationship with the application of an arsenal of skill-sets including:
      • Active Listening
      • Empathetic reflections using PEARLS
      • OARS MI strategies
    2. Encourage greater self-reflection for self and the mentee
    3. Tap onto the principles of self-determination theory (competence, autonomy and relatedness) to bring out mentee’s intrinsic motivation.
    4. Encourage mentee to conduct self-assessment from multiple source of information including feedback
    5. Guide the mentee using:
      • the GROW (Goal, Reality, Options and Will) model
      • ARTful (Ask, Response, Teach) framework of communication
  6. Encourage the setting of ISMART Goals
    • Formulating action planning towards achieving mentee Goals
    • Providing effective feedback (using different strategies including ARTful feedback)
  7. Hone core Facilitation Skills by:
    • Applying Adult learning principles (FAIR principles)
    • Co-creating agenda with inclusion of time management strategies
    • Asking Insightful Questions 
    • Creating Psychological Safety
    • Being Culturally Competent
  8. Address challenging mentoring scenarios using appropriate tools and strategies.
  9. Identify situations where confidentiality may need to be breached and the steps to manage such situations professionally.
